Electroacoustic measurements (AcoustoSizer, Matec Applied Sciences) of
zeta potential and particle size-distribution are reported on well ch
aracterised ultrafine (-5 mu m) sphalerite and galena particles. For b
oth sulfide minerals the zeta potentials determined electroacousticall
y are in good agreement with those determined using the more conventio
nal microelectrophoresis. The applicability of the electroacoustic tec
hnique to sulfide mineral particles is discussed in particular the inf
luence of interparticle interactions, surface oxidation, pH and partic
le solids concentration. (C) 1997 Elsevier Science Ltd.
