Abstract
The beryllium dust resulting from erosion of beryllium samples subject ed to plasma bombardment has been measured in PISCES-B. Loose surface dust was found to be uniformly distributed throughout the device and a ccounts for 3% of the eroded material. A size distribution measurement of the loose surface dust shows an increasing number of particles wit h decreasing diameter. Beryllium coatings on surfaces with a line of s ight view of the target interaction region account for an additional 3 3% of the eroded beryllium material. Flaking of these surface layers i s observed and is thought to play a significant role in dust generatio n inside the vacuum vessel. (C) 1997 Elsevier Science S.A.
