A novel amphiphilic C-60 derivative, C-60-AOOA, was prepared for Langm
uir-Blodgett (LB) films by a thermally reversible Diels-Alder reaction
of C-60 and an anthracene derivative with a carboxylic acid group sid
e chain. This derivative showed a limiting surface area per molecule (
at zero pressure) as large as 0.92 nm(2), which is reasonable for a tr
ue Langmuir monolayer of a C-60 derivative. LB films were formed on va
rious substrates. Their structure and thermal behavior were studied by
X-ray diffraction and FT-IR: the transferred C-60-AOOA decomposes upo
n heat treatment, to form a C-60 layer and/or C-60/C-60-AOOA mixed lay
ers.
