Results of X-ray diffraction study of shock-compressed NaCl single cry
stals of <100> orientation are suggested. A new geometry of X-ray diff
raction survey specially developed for studies of a single crystal sam
ple in the monochromatic radiation was employed to obtain a multi-peak
diffraction pattern allowing the complete determination oi the compon
ents of the crystal strain tenser. During the compression of the cryst
als their state was continuously monitored by velocity interferometer.
The diffraction patterns obtained at the different regions of the pla
stic wave front evident that the crystal is able to maintain the state
of unidimensional compression up to the strain level of about 0.06.
