Titanium alloys exhibit attractive ballistic performances due to their
low density and their high mechanical properties. They are unfortunat
ely very sensitive to adiabatic shear localization. This study aims to
determine an empirical parameter which allows to characterise the sen
sitivity to the adiabatic shear banding of different grades of titaniu
m alloys. Dynamic punching tests by split Hopkinson pressure bar are p
erformed on disc shaped specimen to obtain shear bands. This article d
eals with the possibility to size different materials according to the
ir sensitivity to adiabatic shear on a defined scale with a such simpl
e test.
