This paper presents generalization of results, obtained by experimenta
l investigations of dynamic response, strength, and load-bearing abili
ty of cylindrical and spherical shells, manufactured from composite ma
terials on the basis of fiber glass, under loading them by explosion o
f compact high-explosive charges on the inside. The paper describes me
chanisms and criteria of destruction of such shells, methods to improv
e their specific load-bearing ability. Results of experiments concerni
ng investigation of dependence of specific load-bearing ability on loa
ding rate, absolute sizes of samples, structural and technological pec
uliarities of the material are considered. On the basis of considered
results it is suggested to use limiting strains of the most stressed c
omposite layers as the general criterion of dynamic strength for mater
ials of this class. We draw a conclusion that application of fiber gla
sses in load-bearing shells of protective structures has considerable
promise.
