Abstract
We present spectrophotometry of a sample of 26 Southern binary galaxie s 17 pairs were confirmed to be physically associated with typical sep aration of 136 h(-1) kpc. Pairs with velocity difference Delta v great er than or equal to 600 km s(-1) are probably not physically bound. A comparison with field galaxies suggests that galaxies in pairs tend to have a younger population probably stimulated by tidal interaction. N o correlation between the young population and projected separation wa s found.
