Z. Uysal et al., SHORT COMMUNICATION - URINARY ZINC EXCRETION IN BETA-THALASSEMIA MAJOR PATIENTS WITH AND WITHOUT HEPATITIS, Trace elements in medicine, 11(3), 1994, pp. 153-154
This study was performed in order to find out whether urinary Zn excre
tion which is already increased in patients with beta-thalassemia, is
further increased during the state of hepatitis. A total of 32 beta-ha
lassemia major patients (17 male and 15 female) were included. The mea
n Zn-basal levels of the patients is significantly higher than the mea
n Zn excretion observed in controls (1276.0 +/- 199.20 mug/day) vs 427
.60 +/- 74.37 (mug/day) p < 0.001). Significant difference is also obs
erved between the mean basal Zn values of the patients with and withou
t hepatitis (2414.43 +/-645.28 (mug/day) vs 1276. +/- 199.20 (mug/day)
; p < 0.001).
