Abstract
The equivalence between the illumination and collection modes of the S canning Near-Field Optical Microscope (SNOM) is established based on t he reciprocity theorem for electromagnetic fields. This equivalence ho lds provided that the sample and the optical elements involved are lin ear and characterized by symmetric constitutive tensors. (C) 1997 Publ ished by Elsevier Science B.V.
