Purpose The objective of this study was to show the severity of sympat
hetic ophthalmia and the need for immunosuppressive treatment. Methods
The study included five cases of sympathetic ophthalmia following ocu
lar injury in three cases and evisceration in two cases. The ocular le
sions included total uveitis in all cases with papillary oedema in two
cases. The treatment was based on corticosteroid therapy, with immuno
depressants in four cases. Results Functional prognosis was good in fo
ur cases, with final visual acuity between 3/10 and 10/10. Conclusion
Immunosuppressive treatment must be used on all cases of sympathetic o
phthalmia with the goal of improving visual prognosis.
