Recently published data on the penetration of long tungsten rods into
confined aluminum nitride targets are further analyzed. It is conclude
d that the difference between the primary, steady-state penetration an
d the total penetration is too large to be accounted for by theories o
f 'after-flow' and is, instead, due to secondary penetration of the er
oded penetrator material after the primary penetrator-target interacti
