Abstract
The complete Escherichia coli genome sequence is now known; it should greatly facilitate the analysis of other genomes, but a lot remains to be learnt about E. coli itself. About half the genes were previously uncharacterized, but expanding databases and improving analysis method s will help predict their functions. (C) Current Biology Ltd ISSN 0960 -9822.
