Abstract
A semi-classical density functional is used to evaluate the smooth par t of the variation of the Hartree-Fock (HF) binding energy in atoms, f rom helium to xenon. The energy density functional is chosen with an o ptimized form for the kinetic energy functional, and the charge densit y function with an analytic form whose parameters are determined throu gh a minimization procedure.
