The investigations in the Xanthi-Komotini Basin (Thrace, northern Gree
ce) have provided useful data about the stratigraphy and biochronology
of the Neogene/Quaternary deposits. A ''lower group'' and an ''upper
group'' of sediments were distinguished Three new localities with moll
usc fauna have been found. Their faunal composition and similarities s
uggest euxinic (eastern Paratethyan) origin and latest Miocene age for
the higher part of the lower group. The mollusc fauna deposits are ov
erlain by terrestrial deposits of upper most part of ''lower group'' i
ncluding a new mammalian fauna. Preliminary determination of the mater
ial and comparison with other eastern Mediterranean faunas suggest ear
ly Ruscinian (MN 14) age.
