Most of the nine papers in this issue were presented at the 4th Intern
ational Conference on Paleoceanography (ICP IV) in Kiel, September 199
2. With two exceptions (Matishov et al., 1994-this volume, Reimnitz et
al., 1994-this volume) they are all based more or less on data collec
ted on the international three-ship expedition (Arctic 91) to the cent
ral Arctic Ocean (Anderson, 1991; Futterer, 1992) and represent a cont
inuation of the Arctic deep-sea research report about the Nansen Basin
(Pfirman and Thiede, 1992). Included in this summary is a paper of Ga
rd (1993) which is also based on the Arctic 91 cores. Together, these
ten paper elucidate several important problems of the geological prope
rties and history of the deep Arctic Basin and the surrounding shelves
.
