Abstract
We describe the principle of a Mach-Zehnder directional coupler switch based on the use of single mode fibres. The binary phase retardation is obtained thanks to a large tilt angle smectic C liquid crystal. Th e advantages of such a solution with respect to the minimization of co upling loss and cross-talk are discussed. (C) 1997 Elsevier Science B. V.
