On the basis of an analysis of indenter penetration diagrams some mech
anical properties of surface layers of bulk A(II)B(VI) compounds were
investigated. These crystals were grown from the melt, and vapour phas
e. Values of Young's modulus, activation volume of microindentation, p
arameter of hysteresis loss were determined. The analysis of the resid
ual deformation during microindentation permitted to evaluate the degr
ee of covalent bond ''stiffness''. An original combination of the mech
anical properties of the investigated crystals typical for metals, pol
ymeric materials and glasses was discovered.
