We discuss the performance of a chiral constituent-quark model with re
gard to the description of light- and strange-baryon spectra. The mode
l employs a linear confinement and an effective interaction between co
nstituent quarks derived from Goldstone-boson exchange. Precise Faddee
v and variational calculations are carried out for the three-quark sys
tems. The model provides a simultaneous explanation of the ground-stat
e and excitation spectra of all the light and strange baryons much imp
roved as compared to previous attempts.
