A system is described for detecting optical radiation in order to meas
ure the transverse dimensions of beams and their particle density dist
ribution. The system is based on hodoscope photomultipliers, scintilla
tors, fiber-optic transmission lines, and electronic units. The system
was designed for monitoring beams of elementary particles in the K4-K
10 c-tau-factory accelerator-storage systems, the synchrophasotron, an
d the nuclotron, with energies of 20 MeV to 10 GeV and intensities of
10(3)-10(8) particles/cm(2). A brief description is given of the optic
al part, the design of the detector, and the hardware and software.
