Ra. Barrio et al., ROBUST SYMMETRICAL PATTERNS IN THE FARADAY EXPERIMENT, Physical review. E, Statistical physics, plasmas, fluids, and related interdisciplinary topics, 56(4), 1997, pp. 4222-4230
Symmetric patterns were recently obtained in the famous Faraday experi
ment by using a special liquid. A model is developed to explain the ro
bustness of the observed patterns. A dissipation mechanism is introduc
ed phenomenologically and shown to be responsible for the stabilizatio
n of patterns with several symmetries. The resulting system of nonline
ar equations resembles the well-known Turing equations used to study p
attern formation in biological systems.
