Benign esophageal tumors occur infrequently, with leiomyomas accountin
g for approximately 70% of cases. Benign neural tumors of the esophagu
s account for 200 cases reported in the literature and rarely require
operative resection. The case of a 58-year-old woman with a 1-month hi
story of progressive dysphagia and odynophagia is presented. A large i
ntramural esophageal mass was resected through a right thoracotomy, an
d the esophagus was primarily repaired. Histologic examination reveale
d a neurofibroma. (C) 1997 by The Society of Thoracic Surgeons.
