The participation of repulsive forces in the movement of ions in water
is discussed in a simple context, namely by recognizing that the inte
raction, resulting from their electronic charge distributions, between
ions and water molecules produces a repulsion between them, due to Pa
uli's exclusion principle. This is a quantum mechanical effect which,
to our knowledge, has not previously been taken into account in treatm
ents of this phenomenon. We have included this repulsive interaction a
s a Born-Mayer-type term in the equation for ionic conductance publish
ed by Zwanzig some years ago. The corrected ionic conductance obtained
in this way fits experimental data fairly well.
