Abstract
The effect of the electronic structure on the K beta(5) chemical shift s of the cations of the first transition series in oxides is discussed . The Delta K beta(5)-ICP diagram is correlated with the Zaanen, Sawat zky, Alien classification of the TM oxides (ICP ionic-covalent paramet er). The early transition metal oxides with 3d(1) to 3d(4) electronic configurations are Mott-Hubbard insulators and the late transition met al oxides (3d(5) to 3d(9)) are intermediate or charge transfer insulat ors. The energy positions of the K beta(1-3) and K beta(5) bands are c orrelated with oxidation state of vanadium, chromium and manganese oxi des : a linear relation has been established between Delta K beta(1-3) and Delta K beta(5) and the ICP of the emitting cation. These data al low analytical applications, i.e. the determination of the oxidation s tate of V, Cr and Mn in oxides.
