This paper describes efforts by the Process Energy Standards Subcommit
tee of the CPPA Technical Section Energy Committee to develop energy/t
onne standards for specific pulp and paper processes, starting with th
e paper machine. Comparisons among mills have not been valid because o
f differences in metering and calculation. The use of a diagram showin
g what is included in each step helps. The aim of this paper is to con
vince mills that they should clarify what is in the numbers and work t
oward uniform metering and calculation to allow meaningful comparisons
among mills. The standards will be useful for cost control and enviro
nmental choice and labeling programs.
