Abstract
A widely held industry belief is that deadtime compensator algorithms provide much better regulation than that available from PI control. Ma ny control systems have been justified based on an expected variabilit y reduction of 50%. This belief is unfounded. Only the setpoint tracki ng of deadtime compensators is better. Deadtime induces resonance in t he regulation response regardless of the algorithm, hence amplifying p rocess variability at the resonant frequency.
