The principal objective of this project was to define the conditions i
n which compact heat exchangers could be used with liquids giving depo
sits. The problem was dealt with by phenomenological approaches in gen
eric studies which were intended to isolate a particular phenomenon in
order to model it and by in situ experiments. In the area of design.
mitigation and prevention, some specific studies concerning, for examp
le, the development and use of monitors have shown good progress. All
of these approaches were used in order to facilitate the improved sizi
ng of equipment and the more effective detection and prevention of fou
ling in compact heat exchangers. (C) European Communities 1997. Publis
