The dispersion of longitudinal acoustic phonons has been measured by i
nelastic x-ray scattering in the sodium-chloride phase of CdTe at 7.5
GPa. A substantial increase of the phonon frequencies with respect to
the dispersion curve at ambient pressure is observed in the momentum t
ransfer region Q=3-10 nm(-1): This corresponds to an increase of the s
ound velocity from 3100 m/s to 5100+/-300 m/s, in good agreement with
extrapolations based on the equation of state.
