A. Govindaraj et al., CARBON NANOSPHERES AND TUBULES OBTAINED BY THE PYROLYSIS OF HYDROCARBONS, Philosophical magazine letters, 76(5), 1997, pp. 363-367
Monodispersed nanospheres of carbon are obtained by the pyrolysis of m
ethane or benzene at high temperatures in the presence of hydrogen wit
hout the use of any catalyst. Carbonization of these hydrocarbons over
transition metal powders (for example Ni) or supported metal catalyst
s, however, yields carbon nanotubes.
