A novel and expeditious approach for direct determination of phenols i
n water and waste water based on solid-phase extraction coupled to a f
low injection analysis (FIA) manifold is described. The method employs
on-line preconcentration of phenols using a 3 cm X 3 mm column packed
with Amberlite XAD-2 resin. The phenols are subsequently eluted from
the resin into a flowing system with an alkaline solution and quantifi
ed spectrophotometrically as the products of reaction with 4-aminoanti
pyrine (4-AAP) system. The sensitivity offered by the procedure was hi
gher by a factor of pH=13 than that provided by a conventional FIA met
hod.
