PROBLEMS OF PLANT GENETICS

The main directions and results of studies on plant genetics at the In stitute of Cytology and Genetics (Siberian Division, Russian Academy o f Sciences) are reviewed. The history of laboratories specializing in plant genetics and the participation of famous Russian geneticists in their organization are described. The role of Academician D.K. Belyaev , director of the institute, in defining certain research problems is acknowledged. The effective combination of fundamental and applied stu dies are emphasized, conceived by the founder of the institute N.P. Du binin and consistently maintained by Belyaev.
