Group work, as a method, has been practised widely by Indian social wo
rkers. However, theory has not kept pace with practice. The article re
views the very sparse literature on the subject by Indian authors and
goes on to draw implications for social group work in India. It questi
ons the lines of division made between the three methods of social wor
k and stresses the need for systematically recording the indigenous ex
periences of social workers and/or social activists in India in order
to enhance the theory base.
