Remnants of a giant ophiolite nappe outcrop in the Central-East part o
f Sulawesi. Although dismembered, the ophiolite displays all terms of
a ''normal'' ophiolite including gabbros containing primary brown amph
iboles. A 44 +/- 4 Ma isotopic age is estimated for their formation. T
his age corresponds to that of formation of numerous Ante-Miocene fore
-arc basins in this area. According to available palaeotectonic models
, it is considered that the Sulawesi ophiolite formed at the eastern m
argin of the Eurasian plate.
