The synthesis of five long-chain (C-8 to C-12) alkyl ethers of S-(-)-t
yrosine and of five long-chain (C-8 to C-12) alkyl esters of S-(+)-glu
tamic acid is described. Among these ligands, only n-octyl tyrosine an
d n-decyl tyrosine have been reported previously. Ten new Cu(II) compl
exes of these novel tyrosine and glutamic acid derivatives were synthe
sized. Spectroscopic evidence suggests that these square-planar comple
xes adopt a trans-configuration and shows that the ligands are bidenta
te. Bonding occurs via the oxygen atoms of the carboxylate groups and
the nitrogen atoms of the amino groups.
