Abstract
The necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of a solutio n to the one-dimensional magnetotelluric inverse problem are extended to error data. The confidence criterion is defined and used for testin g the existence of a one-dimensional solution when data errors are con sidered. Synthetic data sets and two very popular real data sets are t ested using this new confidence criterion.
