In order to obtain films of liquid crystalline polymers, a commercial
polyethylene films was grafted with acryloyl chloride using gamma-irra
diation, and two tolane-containing alcohols were reacted with the chlo
ride to obtain the corresponding acrylates. The morphology changes wer
e studied by DSC, X-ray diffractometry and optical microscopy. The cry
stallinity of polyethylene films decreased by grafting, and mesophase
with spherulites was observed over a wide temperature range.
