This article will describe the development and use of compensatory str
ategies for people with traumatic brain injury. Brain injury results i
n a wide variety of physical, cognitive, communication and behavioural
deficits which impact on daily living skills, work and recreation. Be
cause of these problems, strategy development may be required to addre
ss many aspects of a client's life. As this article shows, the compens
atory strategies incorporated into one community-based, real-life reha
bilitation programme in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, are as varied as t
he challenges they seek to address. (C) 1997 Elsevier Science Ireland
