J. Leuker et al., CAPTURE OF POLARIZED ELECTRONS INTO EXCITED TERMS OF FAST ATOMS DURING GRAZING SCATTERING FROM A MAGNETIZED FE(110) SURFACE, Surface science, 388(1-3), 1997, pp. 262-275
Fast He+-, Li+-, and Na+-ions with energies ranging from about 5 keV t
o 360 keV are scattered under a grazing angle of incidence from a magn
etized Fe(110) surface. The spin polarization of electrons captured in
to excited atomic terms is investigated via the polarization of the fl
uorescence light. We present data for this capture as a function of pr
ojectile velocity and of target temperature. For the Fe(110) surface w
e observe a pronounced dependence of the spin polarization on the proj
ectile velocity and discuss our results in the framework of some simpl
e theoretical concepts. (C) 1997 Elsevier Science B.V.
