Fga. Vandermeche et Pa. Vandoorn, FUTURE-DEVELOPMENTS IN THE TREATMENT OF IMMUNE-MEDIATED POLYNEUROPATHIES, European neurology, 38(3), 1997, pp. 230-237
The Guillain-Barre syndrome and chronic inflammatory demyelinating pol
yneuropathy are the most extensively studied immune-mediated neuropath
ies. Randomized treatment studies have been performed with corticoster
oids, plasma exchange and more recently with high-dose immunoglobulins
. In the future treatment may be more individualized based on specific
immunological mechanisms. More immune-modulating treatments will beco
me available also with recombinant DNA technology. This will offer new
possibilities, but prior to the effective introduction of these new m
olecules in the clinical setting, careful consideration and clinical t
rials are required.
