F. Braccini et al., EXTRAMEDULLARY PLASMACYTOMA - REPORT OF A CASE DEVELOPED IN THE LARYNX, La Semaine des hopitaux de Paris, 73(29-30), 1997, pp. 929-931
Extramedullary plasmacytoma is an uncommon tumor that usually arises i
n the upper respiratory and/or digestive tract, although the larynx is
the site least often involved. The submucosal location of the tumor m
akes the diagnosis difficult, and most cases are identified late upon
evaluation of nonspecific local symptoms. The diagnosis relies on immu
nohistochemistry. Multiple myeloma differs radically from extramedulla
ry plasmacytoma in terms of management and prognosis and should theref
ore be definitely ruled out based on a set of converging clinical and
radiological arguments. The management of laryngeal extramedullary pla
smacytoma rests on surgery and/or radiation therapy. Follow-up should
be prolonged since some patients develop locoregional recurrences or m
ultiple myeloma.
