A recent paper by Fiedel (1996) denouncing the validity of ''blood'' r
esidue analysis was found to contain several inaccuracies concerning m
ethodologies and interpretation of data. In this paper we discuss some
of the interpretative errors made in the Fiedel paper, present an his
torical perspective of immune analysis and point out some recent studi
es supportive of the use of residue analysis in an archaeological cont
