A new class of biodegradable copolyesters was prepared by polycondensa
tion of sebacoyl chloride with mixtures of silylated isosorbide and si
lylated O,O'-bis(2-hydroxyethyl)hydroquinone in bulk. A class of poly(
ester-anhydride)s was synthesized from sebacoyl chloride and mixtures
of silylated O,O'-bis(2-hydroxyethyl)hydroquinone and silylated 4-hydr
oxybenzoic acid. A second class of poly(ester-anhydride)s was obtained
by polycondensation of sebacoyl chloride with mixtures of silylated i
sosorbide and silylated il-hydroxybenzoic acid. The molar ratio of anh
ydride and ester groups was varied via the proportion of 4-hydroxybenz
oic acid in the feed. All polyesters were characterized by inherent vi
scosities, elemental analyses, H-1 NMR and IR spectra, WAXS and DSC me
asurements. All polyesters proved to be semicrystalline materials.
