The synthesis of a photocrosslinkable polycation and its use in the as
sembly of alternating polyelectrolyte multilayers are described. Chara
cterization by UV/VIS spectroscopy and time-of-flight secondary ion ma
ss spectroscopy (ToF-SIMS) reveals the influence of the crosslinking o
n the physical properties of the build-ups. Remarkably, the assembly o
f such multilayer structures is not only possible on hydrophilic subst
rates, but also on apolar poly(propylene). In this case, the crosslink
able polycation turns out to be especially useful to obtain stable, so
lvent resistant coatings.
