The chelating properties of the pentadentate ligand 2,6-diacetylpyridi
ne bis(thiosemicarbazone) hydrochloride, H(2)daptsc.HCl, have been inv
estigated in a new organotin complex, [PhSnPh(Hdaptsc)]Cl {or [Sn(C6H5
)(2)(C11H14N7S2)]Cl}. The structure determination revealed a monocatio
nic complex consisting of a heptacoordinated Sn-IV in a distorted pent
agonaI-bipyramidal geometry, with the thiosemicarbazone derivative act
ing as a pentadentate species at the equatorial plane and two phenyl g
roups at trans positions. The chloride acts as a counterion. Sn-119 Mo
ssbauer measurements showed that the isomer shift and the quadrupole s
plitting are consistent with structural interpretation.
