This paper investigates impacts of energization transients of large sh
unt reactors on the operation of HVAC and HVDC/AC power systems. The E
lectromagnetic Transients Program for DC systems (EMTDC) is used for t
he simulation studies. The studies conclude that shunt reactor energiz
ation can result in undesirable response of power system apparatus and
even interruption of power flow, e.g. commutation failure of HVDC con
verters. The studies also indicate-that the energization transients ca
n be adequately alleviated based on the use of preinsertion resistor a
nd/or controlled energization strategies.
