E. Keiner et al., STUDYING FOR PROFESSIONAL PRACTICE - PEDA GOGUES PROSPECTIVE AND RETROSPECTIVE VIEWS, Zeitschrift fur Padagogik, 43(5), 1997, pp. 803-825
The authors examine the significance of pedagogical studies for the pr
ofessional self-image as exemplified by studies leading to a diploma i
n education. Based on regionally limited surveys, the analysis follows
a twofold perspective. First, prospective conceptions of students con
cerning future professional activities are described, these are juxtap
osed with retrospective estimations given by practising diploma'd peda
gogues on the significance of their studies for their professional pra
ctice. Within the context of profession-theoretical considerations, a
limited dependence on rules and acting marked by uncertainty are defin
ed as the characteristics of pedagogical work, the specific profile of
which is formed in the practical field. This implies that practice or
ientation and professional orientation should be emphasized less in ed
ucational science, rather, the studies should be interpreted as a room
for different possibilities of appropriation open to diverse attribut
ions which serves the learning of the reflexive and competent handling
of uncertainties.
