Abstract
In this note we respond to comments made by Van Loosdrecht and colleag ues regarding our unifying hypothesis for biofilm formation. We concur with much of what the authors state; however, we remain of the opinio n that substrate concentration is the most important of the many facto rs that influence the structure of a biofilm.
