Abstract
By approximating gain fluctuation of a fading channel with a Markov mo del, a method is proposed for the analysis of a finitely interleaved t rellis-coded modulation system (TCM) over a fading channel. The Markov model is optimized with a genetic algorithm, with the autocorrelation function of the symbol-error rate on a fading channel approximated wi th that on the Markov model. The performance of a TCM is analyzed with a generating function on a combined trellis diagram of the TCM and th e Markov model. An analysis using a Markov model with two to four stat es is presented. The range of adaptation of the Markov model is discus sed for a channel with SNR different from the design value. The perfor mance of the code developed with the proposed analysis is described.
