This paper proposes a novel type of edge-preserving smoothing filter t
o be applied to an image corrupted by impulsive and white Gaussian noi
se. This filter is based on a weighted mean filter having two kinds of
coefficient for impulsive and white Gaussian noise. These coefficient
s can be varied adaptively by local features in the window. Fuzzy cont
rol laws that can be used for the implementation of the proposed filte
r are described. To reduce the computational burden, the fuzzy inferen
ce model proposed by Ichihashi and coworkers is employed. Finally we d
emonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed technique by using result
