Two-dimensional structures of 28 x 28 Teflon cylinders with average pe
riodic square and rectangular lattices are prepared. The far-infrared
spectra are measured at high-symmetry points of the structures and for
a and p waves, respectively, and the corresponding photonic bands are
calculated. In most cases, the agreement between measurements and cal
culations is good. The influences of disorder upon the transmission sp
ectra are observed. The unexpected transmission dips at the M point of
p wave and the very low transmittance in the high-frequency region ar
