PURPOSE: To report a case of Purtscher-like retinopathy after administ
ration of retrobulbar anesthesia for an otherwise uncomplicated catara
ct extraction. METHOD: Case report. RESULTS: After cataract surgery wi
th retrobulbar anesthesia, the patient followed a typical course of Pu
rtscher-like retinopathy with an initial severe loss of vision followe
d by a gradual and nearly complete improvement in visual function. CON
CLUSIONS: Purtscher-like retinopathy is un common after administration
of retrobulbar anesthesia but had the same clinical course as other c
auses of this disorder.
